About Our Practice
When you have digestive or liver problems, you need to turn to a gastroenterologist who listens and responds … a doctor who knows the field and can effectively diagnose, treat your needs, and improve the quality of your health. This philosophy began in 1972 when Barton Smith, MD began Digestive Disease Associates here in Berks County.
This passion and vision remains today. We are informed, diverse and highly trained leaders in the field of gastroenterology. Our 15 physicians are board certified and fellowship trained, providing a full range of services in the field of gastroenterology and hepatology.
With the support of more than 70 employees, our physicians provide coverage at the Reading Hospital and Medical Center. We believe in using our time and talent to give back to the community through support of programs such as The American Cancer Society to promote the importance of cancer screenings, specifically colon cancer. Our physicians also serve in leadership roles within professional health organizations such as The Pennsylvania Society of Gastroenterology and The Berks Independent Physicians Association. We are always pleased to share our knowledge, and continue to be a visible presence within community education programs to support health, wellness, and well-being.
Our Mission: To provide superior and compassionate health care in the specialty of gastroenterology and hepatology.
